Oregon Dodges Adams State by Refusing the team entry to the 2009 Dellinger Meet

It may not be Lananna's unwillingness to face AsU. I think OU would beat them anyway. It may be Lananna's unwillingness to have a D2 team come in and whoop up on many of the other contenders they have come in for that race. Those teams might not come back in successive years. Gotta keep the money flow coming in.

Also, with the way the at-large bids work now (all this head to head counting) having a D2 team in a big meet like that where so many nationals contenders are might make it difficult to count these things....i don't know.

I, for one, would like to see it happen. Just put the best runners against the other best runners.

What a soft move. I had heard that Adams were trying to get into Dellinger and I really hoped it would happen. This speaks volumes about Oregon.

Are any other D2 teams in the meet? They could just want it to be a D1 only meet, no matter how good the D2 team is.

There are rules as to how many non D1 teams you can go against if I remember correctly.

The rule for D1 is that 90% of your competition must be D1. So for open xc meets it means that to have 1 D2 team you need at least 9 D1 teams. The Dellinger mee has more than 10 D1 teams so there is no excuse for not letting Adams in.

This is how Adams were ok to run (and win) at Griak last year.

There would be no rule saying that Oregon has to let Adams State into the meet although I think they should. Arkansas routinely let Abilene Christian come to the Chile Pepper meet and actually lost to them the year that James Karanu dnf'ed.

Usually these things are arranged behind the scenes and not via an application process, so who knows what did or did not take place in that regard. I do know that Damon has a talent for rubbing people the wrong way, but again, I think Vin should let them into the meet. However, it's his meet and he can do what he thinks is best.

Good point, and OSU regularly let Abeline and Harding into the Cowboy Jamboree and even got beaten by Abeline a couple of years back and still invite them. Theres something to be said if Oregon and Lanana with all that Nike money and facilities are scared about being beaten by a school of less then 2000 people from a tiny mountain town who work on about 0.0001% of U of O's budget.

If Oregon really didn\'t let Adams State in the meet, that\'s kind of bull, but I am pretty damn sure U of O is not scared of getting beat by Adams State. Unless Adams State is in peak shape and Oregon doesn\'t run a couple of their top guys, it wouldn\'t even be close.

c'mon now. is anyone truly surprised? this is oregon we are talking about. the team that has a head coach, who is not a head coach b/c of a technicality in the ncaa rule book. you don't think they make all of their moves like a chess game? who are we kidding.

How do you know that it wouldn't be close? I consider altitude teams like Adams better at the long distance XC races than track ones.

Still Adams has 13:36, 13:40 guys leading the way and backs that up with at least one more sub 14 guy and a host of low 14's.. just track times. Then you have guys like McNiff, who's a better XC guy (made the U.S. World Jr Team several years ago)

Look at Griak results from last year and tell me it wouldn't be close. Adams returns pretty much everyone from that race except Mwei.

Also, i'm not from Alamosa but i do know they are Very good!

Trust me U of O are scared of getting beat by Adams State. With no more Rupp and Biwott Adams would be the favorites on paper and those guys are beasts on the cross!

adams state would not beat oregon. sorry.

they are very good. but they won griak last year but not by a landslide... 10 points or so if i remember. oregon would have been pretty close to a perfect score against the teams that ran at griak.

oregon does lose 2 of their top 3... doesn't adams state as well?

Good points. And who knows what Oregon's decision is based on. I have a feeling it's not because they're too afraid of losing. Too bad, either way, I agree with the original poster that the race would be more interesting with ASC in there.

If fear of losing is not Oregons reason for not letting ASC in then please tell me what is their reason!? One of the top teams in the country period want to come to your xc meet when there are an abundance of high quality meets (Notre Dame, Cowboy Jamboree, Stanford, Griak, etc etc) that teams have to chose from and you say no!!!??????

Somebody gave a damn good reason earlier. Other "top DI" programs would lose to Adams State, wouldn't want to come back, so it would be a bad move for their meet. It sucks for Adams State, and the fans, because it would be interesting. Still, I can't fault Oregon too much for this decision.

What rumor? All it takes is someone with a hint of business acumen to see why allowing Adams State to run in their race would be disadvantageous, for more reasons than just "being scared".

Weeellll, for starters, every time I see or hear of D-II teams going into big meet situations with D-I schools it is like it is some sort of mission or quest. I remember a few years ago Chico State was making the trip up to Seattle for the Sundodger. There was this whole big deal about how they had to van it for 2 days, and had to sleep a bunch of guys to one room or some such nonsense. Even last year, Adams' trip to Griak was another "big deal" that was hyped up. Has anyone considered that the D-I schools have nothing to gain from these early season quasi-competitions with the smaller schools. THEIR nationals is the 3rd week of November, not the 3rd or 4th week of September. Maybe the D-I teams are only at 70-75% at that time for peaking reasons and don't want to have to blow it out to beat a team that means nothing to them points wise. There isn't as much room for error in D-I as there is in D-II depth wise. That isn't a dig, it's a fact. There are great teams at the top in D-II, just not as many numbers wise as in D-I. The bottom line, is that the big schools don't owe the smaller schools anything.
