They are not required to attend public schools beyond 8th grade, culturally bound to the familial group, expected to contribute towards that end exclusively. It's those damned Menonites that you have to look out for!
we's too busy gettin' loaded and doing acid and thumping in buggies which have battery powered systems and neon lights around the top and building churches and talking on our cell phone (no cord, not connected to the outside world!!!) and going to bars to watch football on the big screen (it's not my big screen!!!) hoorah for loopholes!
Amish Thorpe was fast
Jim Thorpe was Indian.
How did they do it? Hard work -- and lots of foot power. Their weekly exercise was equivalent to that of long-distance runners. Men averaged 18,425 steps a day. Women averaged 14,196 daily steps.
Anyone know how many steps the average runner will take in a mile?
just an example
stride - 2 meters
over 1609 meters
804 steps
I took 46,000 steps to run 33 miles.
What a surprise! The study found that regular work will make a person fitter. Startling. I hope the Amish remain at a distance from the rest of us heathens otherwise we might start emulating them.
What's this: clip clop clip clop clip clop... blam! blam! ...clip clop clop clop....
Amish drive-by shooting
If they are so fit, why don't we ever see any hot Amish girls?
Making furniture and cherry pies to sell to dullard dim wits.

How do you suppose Bassett got "98 of these men and women to wear a modern step-counting device"? Don't they refuse to use zippers?
Amish wasn't Amish, was he?

I'll sell you my "Pennsylavania Dutch Girls '02" calendar. The one for July has a loose thread on the top button of her dress. That button's almost opened.
A similar article was in the NYTimes yesterday, it said the average Amish man, in a given week, did 50 hours of moderate to vigorous work (sitting at a desk doesn't count) and walked 12 hours. My guess is competitive running or even running at all would be against their religion.
As for Amish women, Kelly McGillis was hot, soapy and ready to party.
An Amish woman and her daughter were riding in an old buggy one cold, blustery January day. The daughter said to the mother, "My hands are freezing cold." The mother replied, "Put your hands between your legs. The body heat will warm them up." So the daughter did, and her hands warmed up. The next day, the daughter was riding in the buggy with her boyfriend. The boyfriend said, "My hands are freezing cold." The daughter replied, "Put them between my legs, they'll warm up." The next day, the boyfriend was again driving in the buggy with the daughter. He said, "My nose is freezing cold." The daughter replied, "Put it between my legs. It will warm up." He did, and his nose warmed up. The next day, the boyfriend was once again driving with the daughter and he said, "My penis is frozen solid."
The next day, the daughter is driving in the buggy with her mother, and she says to her mother, "Have you ever heard of a penis?"
The slightly concerned mother says, "Sure, why do you ask?"
The daughter says, "Well, they make one hell of a mess when they thaw out."

Assuming a fairly good runner takes about 180 strides per
minute (according to Jack Daniels), a mile in 5-7 minutes
would be 900-1260 strides. Someone really fast might be
closer to 190 spm, but then they would spend less time
covering a mile. As a rough approximation, 1000 strides per mile would be a good working number.
When I'm good and warm, I typically hover around 3,500 spm.
