The 3rd place finisher at USATF is making a shot at the "B" standard tomorrow. After Pifer's 3:38.06 what is the likely outcome concerning the US 1500 squad in Berlin? Lopez Lomong's role? Additional thoughts?

Lomong's role is huge in this whole scenario. I'm fairly sure that he only has the "B", so he is essentially blocking Pifer or Ulrey from running in Berlin--the rules state that only one "B" standard athlete can compete.
If Lomong goes out and gets the "A", then Ulrey would control his own destiny: if he gets the "B" he would get to go; if not, Pifer gets the final spot.
I think Dorian is in great shape right now, and is fairly fresh considering the long season he has had. He definitely has the ability to get pulled to a fast time--he is competitive enough to hang with the lead group and really stick his nose in it.
But again, it's all for naught if Lomong doesn't race again until Worlds.
Unless Ulrey gets the A.
Right...I guess I failed to state the obvious, but you are correct--an "A" for Ulrey is an automatic qualifier.

No - Ulrey or Pifer are blocking Ulrey or Pifer from going to Berlin. Lomong isn't "doing" anything to prevent them from running 3:36.20, is he?
He won. He goes. What else does he need to do?
At the last minute, if neither Ulrey, Pifer or Lomong get an A, USATF could send Webb as the other A if they chose to. This is in the realm of the theoretic however.
You had everything right until the last paragraph. USATF only allowed the top 4-6 finishers to go through team processing in Eugene. So if you weren't among the top finishers, you could break the WR and you're still SOL as far as running at Worlds.

Those are USATF regs, not IAAF. USATF requires all times by 7/31
IAAF by 8/2
So, theoretically, if there are 2 qualifiers (Lomong and Manzano), then USATF could submit Webb's name - IAAF is indifferent.
USATF has moved the goalposts so many times in the past 18 months, why stop now?
"Team Processing"? It sounds like applying for a farm subsidy. This is adding another name to a list. The requirements are minimal. They could if they want...and they well might. Who knows.
If you didn't go through team processing you're not eligible to be named to the US team for Worlds. It's as simple as that. They did all the processing this year at the building adjacent to the track (where drug testing took place, too) right after the completion of the event.Zero chance Webb will run at Worlds.

Webb doesn't "deserve" to go to Worlds. The USATF wouldn't send him even if they could, the last two years have been a testament to his unreliability.
Dorian Ulrey should be capable of running the "B" standard; however, the "A" seems to be too big of a jump. I think he's gonna need Lopez's help.
Any word on what Lopez is up to, racing in Europe?
bump

What I heard was that they took any possibilities and processed them. Whether Webb was included in that I don't know. Is there something definitive which indicates that he wasn't processed?
Bump! So now what's the deal?
Ulrey got the A Standard in Rome 3:35.23 It's no question anymore.
Lomong is lucky they let in a B standard this year
Good job by Ulrey to take of things.
nearly a 5 second peronal best, 3:39:93 going into todays race, 3:35:23 after todays race.
I am convinced German could have run 3:32 high at this race.

Maybe, maybe not. German seemed burned out after NCAA's and had a good but not stellar race at USA's with a 13:25. I still think German is a better 3K-5K guy too, who is able to run a good 1500 and very good if he can run even (like his indoor mile).
Ulrey was sick at NCAA's so you can't use that matchup as a fair one. All we know is that when healthy at USA's he handily beat the same guys that German did at NCAA's.
Top 5 in the country at 18 isn't "stellar"?
