Not only is your girlfriend a paranoid freak, she's also pretty stupid if she doesn't realize that it would take you all of 45 seconds to create a new email account if you actually had something to hide.

I hear from her all the time that all of her friends have their boyfriend's passwords. Which is why I asked the follow-up, just to clarify.

If you love her and want to spend the rest of your life with her, and have nothing to hide from her, who cares?

Otherwise, get couples counseling.

Personally, I wish I was still with the last girlfriend I had that I trusted all my passwords with.

She is wrong. She's quite obsessive if she needs to read your email; she's a bit unstable, too, if not having your password bothers her. Talk to her about it. My gal has never asked for my password, nor would I give it to her if she asked.

if she knows the password AND checks regularly: DUMP HER, she is an untrusting, paranoid freak, who will always find something to break your balls about.

if she knows the password but doesn't check: KEEP HER, sometimes its handy to have someone who can check your mails when you can't and she obviously trusts you if she doesn't have to check all the time.

If this is her only problem, then who cares? It's hard enough as it is to find a good girl. But if it really is 'the last straw' as you say it is and is just another thing on a long list of things that annoy you, then I'd have a long talk about it, since throwing away 6 on and off years of dating kind of sucks. If she still acts like a child, then go ahead and dump her I guess.

I do love her, with her craziness and all; however, I don't know if I can take this questioning and checking up on for the rest of my life. She is amazing, smart, funny, sexy, great sex life, but this is exactly what drives me crazy. I've told her this numerous times, yet it is to no avail.

To be honest, every single time we have broken up about 4 times - her not trusting me was the root of all of this. I know it should not be something that's a big deal, but to have her reading emails that my friends and I send to one another is just more annoying. It is almost as if I cannot respond honestly because I know she's going to read it and then if I say something "off line" then I'll get more crap for that.

Moreover, it's not just the email with her, where she's questions every single thing I do, as if I have some sort of ulterior motive for everything I do - from going to class, to going to work.

I know we have our problems, but this was something that she made seem like it was something that all girls had. While my friends in a relationship don't do this, I wasn't sure if we were the minority in not giving girlfriends passwords, but apparently, most normal people (or Letsrunners) think otherwise.

Do you use gmail? Gmail shows you when your last login was, so you can check and see how often she reads it.

It's fine for her to know the password, because if something happens to you or there's some other emergency, it's good to have someone who can access any important information. But if she's checking a few times a week, that's a little bit crazy. Once a day or more is prying.

If she can't trust you with your own email, she's not going to trust you in a lot of other stuff.

My best advice is to suggest a joint email account that the two of you can share for any personal emails. If that doesn't satisfy her, she's too paranoid, and you need to either learn to deal with that, or drop her for good. Best of luck!

One addendum, if her friends really do talk about their bf's sharing their passwords, I would want to meet these guys ask if it's an issue. I dunno how that would come up in conversation, but it seems like nobody here does that, so you won't get any advice here on how that would work. I would try talking to some who has an open password and see if it causes problems or if it's just an annoyance.

I don't have my boyfriend's password... but then, I feel no need to check his email and I've never asked... interesting...
