Just curious how many of you have run through twisted or sprained ankles taht are somewhat swollen. my inside ankle is swollen from rolling it too much, and it burns and above and below the ankle circular looking bone is painful, and below the ankle is kinda swollen, but i was just wondering how many people have run through things like this? there's no discoloration, the color is normal.
I obtained, thanks to basketball, a 3rd degree high ankle sprain. It forced me out completely for three weeks and then I ran before I was ready, the olympic trials were approaching, and now I have achilles problems from the inflexibility that followed running on an ankle that wasn't ready. Heal first, then run.
I had a very similiar injury ONE week ago! Well, it took me about 7 full days of NO running to finally run. I mostly pool-ran and biked. When I did run, I was only able to make it three miles because the pain was unbearable. Though, I think it was mainly because my ankle was extremly tight. I've been wrapping it and tapeing it for a week, and when I finally let it loosen up some (by running - i was wearing a brace). It was SORE!!! Though, with each passing mile, it loosened up more and more. The next day when I ran it felt much better. The pain was still there, but I felt that the ankle had loosened up a lot. The pain wasn't as nearly as sharp was it was the day before. And of course, with each passing mile, it loosened up more and more.
Can you ride a bike with a deflated tire?
Yes, but not as efficiently and you might wreck.
well okay now that i see your guys points, i need to add something in to this as i see it. I've been trying to do the whole training w/ out orthotics and w/ out flats. Well since I twisted my ankle doing so has only made it worse since the ligaments are even weaker than before. so i went back to my regular trainers and took 3 days off this week just icing it and all that good stuff. well yesterday i did a 4 miler and a 7 miler in regular trainers but w/ no orthotics in there and I could feel the lack of support at my ankle, but it wasn't too bad on either run besides the fact that on my second run my arch was burning a good deal which could have been the lower part of the ankle, i couldn't tell the difference. well the worst part about yesterday was that we had winter formal at our schol and i was in dress shoes w/ out orthotics for who knows how long, and my ankle and arch was burning so bad on my left leg. i finally got back into running shoes w/ orthotics later that night and it made it feel better. well this morning i woke up and it wasn't that bad, and for about an hour this morning i spent putting my foot in an ice bucket and then a heat bucket every 3 minutes switching back and forth. it now feels okay w/ no pain. I'm definately going to wear my orthotics today if i run. does this change anyones opinions or are there anymore?
I had a twisted ankle for 3 weeks thanks to an unfortunate CAT riding accident. I tryed to come back after 1 week but it just reswelled. I had to go to PT for like 3 sessions and they did some ankle exercises. Wait for it to heal or it might never heal right.
well what can i do that won't affect my ankle while waiting? obviously swimming will move the ankle a ton, or is that a good thing? biking will push down on it just like running... ?
I found you could bike with the ankle sprained but be careful not to hit the ankle against the side of the bike or it will hurt like a beast. Use the bike where you are sitting in a chair rather then a stationary bike. Its a pain in the ass waiting and its hard getting back into it but its worth the wait. Some ankle exercises u can do to strengthen the ankle is with like a stretching rubber band. Attach the band to something grounded and put it on ur hurt ankle's foot and pull the band taut. Then rotate the foot as far as you can to the right 8 times then the left 8 times. Be sure it feels like an exercise.
Well I ran 6 miles just now w/ my orthotics back in the shoes and an ankle brace w/ no pain except for a couple shooting pains right above my ankle. as long as I can run pain free for the most part, should I be okay running through it?

You might be but try to do some strengthing exercises just to bring it back up to par.
yeah, the only thing i still worry about is the fact that maybe the only reason it didn't hurt today is just cuz it still has a bit of freshness to it from taking the 3 days off, and that it might just get back to the way it was. do i need to wait until this thing hurts NOT AT ALL, or can i bet starting back with it still feeling a little achy? I know how these things work and how when i take time off and it feels basically comletely better but not the way it should on a run, and in a few more day osf running it's back to the same ole pain. since the first track race doesn't start until march 6th and i've already gotten 10 weeks of base under my belt, should i just be like elliptical training until the swelling is finished and no pains?
