Does anyone know of some sort of statistics? I am doing a paper on safety and running and have seen those stats somewhere but can't seem to find them on the web. Thanks.

The Surface Transportation Policy Project (STPP), a non-profit organization in Washington, DC, produced a report a couple of years ago titled "Mean Streets 2000" that has statistics on pedestrians that have been killed in traffic accidents.
STPP reports that in 1997 and 1998, 10,696 pedestrians died in the United States, 13 percent of all traffic fatalities.
I highly doubt that you will be able to find statistics about runners who have been killed by automobiles. Statistics related to pedestrian deaths is probably the best you can do.
If you're doing an internet search, you may want to enter the word "jogger" instead of "runner". Seriously. I have yet to see a tv story or newspaper article that ever indicates a victim of a hit-and-run, murder, etc was a runner... unless the reporter is an actual runner (like Jim Hage).
You may just have to use the numbers of pedestrians hit for your stats, but use news stories about runners being hit as your example. Just floating ideas, good luck with all of it.
Being a DC-area runner I can honestly say that I fear local drivers more than the local sniper... especially fat drivers. For whatever reason they always seem less likely to pause in an intersection for a red light. Guess they're in a hurry to get to McDonald's so they can pop big mac's down their throat like freakin' tic-tacs, disgusting pigs.
Sorry for going off on a tangent, but I needed to vent.
That's funny, I usually see pencil-neck "runner types" zipping through red lights without a care in the world besides how far they just ran or how much fitter they are than everyone else.
Get yourself to a metro park or some other area where you don't have to worry about traffic, and then there is no chance.
