N-O. They put a lot of time and dedication into it sure, but so do chess players. Crap, so do the world's best Scrabble types.
So why does ESPN broadcast the spelling Bee?
It's a sport as much as Texas Hold'em, which also appears on sports networks.
So why oh why wrote:

You may want to look up what the "E" stands for in ESPN.
Sorry I don't find watching a bunch of dorky ethnic kids spell words entertaining.
Spelling is not a sport. It is a competition though. 'Sport' lends itself to at least some sort of physical exertion. Biggest single criterion for an activity being considered a sport or not? Can you drink beer while participating? If so, it might be a competition, it might be a game, but it is probably not a sport. Examples of games that are not sports would be golf, bowling, horseshoes, etc. Even certain softball leagues are decidedly un-sport-like. Who agrees?
Beer is a good barometer, so the following are not sports:
Spelling Bee
Poker
Baseball
Nascar
Golf
Fishing
Chess

pretty sure you don't wanna drink while participating in Nascar and Baseball
Continuing with the beer theory, these wouldn't be sports either...
sailing
croquet
the one where they sweep the ice in front of the puck
For some people, getting off the couch is a sport.
well then... wrote:

Running--Hashers unite!
If it's a competitive physical activity with a set of rules or guidelines, it's a sport.
So...
Spelling is not a sport.
Golf, Baseball, Curling, Darts, etc are sports.
It really doesn't matter what you nerds think. This is correct. If you think I'm wrong, you're a bit slow.
After watching a couple of episodes of Tori & Dean: Inn Love, I think Tori is a pretty good one.....
if your physical fitness can be independent of the success you can achieve in an activity, I have trouble calling it a sport
Bartolo Colon, Tony Stewart, and John Daly are fat as f*** and have been reasonably successful in their ACTIVITY in spite of this...so I don't consider baseball, golf, or driving a car to be sports.
For that matter I could be fat and still spell.
Wow! An Indian kid won again.
When's the last time an American kid won it?
You mean a white American as opposed to an Asian-American?
