Ok, 5:00 mile pace is 2:11:00 marathon pace. Take a guy like Geb who's run 2:03:59 get him to run 7 minutes slower than his marathon pr, and I bet he could go another 10k.

I thought the best thing to do was to run a pace I'm used to. If the pace is too slow then I can't get into my rhythm and my body doesn't move properly.

Last time I checked the 50km (31.11 miles) record was 2:43:38. That is a 5:16 per mile pace, roughly equivalent to a 2:16 marathon.

So, yes if you get a few sub 2:08 men out there and run them at 5 minutes per mile you'd be able to get the record down to 2:35.

4.89 miles more than a marathon, that would be my guess.

I think if some of the elite marathoners trained for it they could hold 5 flat pace for a full 50k.

Man, I think these estimates are low. Throw a group of 15-20 Kenyans, Ethiopians and the various other African studs out there and motor-pace them at 12mph and I'd think several of them would still be there at 40 miles.

I think maybe one or maybe two guys might be able to go 40 miles at 5:00 pace. But to say several guys would still be there at 40 miles isn't likely.
