on june 1st the fbk games in hengelo, looks to be a great meet with loaded fields in every event, in an iteresting race k. bekele will run a 1500 (he has a pb of 3:32) against asbel kiprop who just ran a 1:43.17 for 800 and is a 1500 specialist, just a guess k. bekele wants to break the 3:31 ethiopian national record, i pick kiprop in 3:28:99 by a second over k. bekele.
preliminary startlist are now up at the meets website.
This is the race to watch actually.It is not just Kiprop and Bekele,there is also Choge,Keitany and Kipchirchir Komen.I think there will be fireworks.In my opinion bekele should have chosen the 3000,i do not see the benefit for him running the 1500,he does not need to learn anymore new tricks.

Maybe Bekele thinks that by training for and running a fast 1500, he will get better at the 3200.

Yes, the 3200, otherwise known as the 2 mile distance. If you add on another ~18 meters, you can call it the full 2 miles.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to that race. Will there be a webcast by any chance?
I don't know why Bekele is running the 1500 but then again quite it's intriguing. However, his main goal this season (apart from WCs) should be the Golden League jackpot. He's confirmed for the 5000 m race at ISTAF Berlin on June 14th.

I say his main goal should just be getting back into top shape, and then he can chase WR's next year. I seriously doubt his number 1 focus apart from WC's is the jackpot. It'd be nice, but he has a future ahead of him that is much more important, and lucrative.

i believe kiprop is ready to bust out a humoungous 1500 - maybe even into the 3'27s
he has a nominal ~3'31.6pb, but in peking looked to be in 3'29 shape - his recent huge improvement over 800 shoud mean he makes mincemeat of even a 3'29
as for kennster, he is not a 3'29/3'30 guy & probably never will be - his intrinsic 400 speed is too slow to get him there - he's running 3'32/3'33 ( albeit poorly paced ) off his endurance ( & i've seen everyone of his 1500s - he was at his absolute limit on the last lap in everyone of them - just slow 3rd laps costing him 1 - 2s )
i can see him going 3'31-flat, but he won't go below that
geb had better 400 ability than kennster & just fractionally inferior endurance ( they wouda been ~ equal at 5k ( but with slight leaning towards geb ), but kennster is probably 2 - 3s superior over 10k ) & that allowed him to run 3'31i ( = no worse than 3'30-flat outdoors & probably nearer 3'29-flat )

Gebrselassie used to start his top seasons with one or two 800m races and then proceeded to his WR attempts over 5km and 10km. He didn't do very good in them (around 1:48-49 for 5th to 8th place), but he sweared on them. Bekele might be doing something similar, but with better chance of placing in the top 3, or possibly braking Ethiopean national record. No harm in doing that, actually quite the opposite. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes for the WR (or couple of them) in the next month.
can you confirm geb ran those 800s ?
it's very interesting if he did ( all iirc was mention of a tt back in '99 when mention of a ?1'47 was made prior to seville )
his longer distance ability pointed towards ~ 1'46/1'47 ability for 800 which is consistent with 1'48/1'49 you mention if you take into account he didn't run enough of them to gauge the optimum pacing to run his fastest possible & presumably if he'd run 1/2 dozen of them/year he'd have got his time down to maybe 1'46/1'47
