I am a beginner runner and I have been training to run a marathon since January. Yes, most of you would consider my pace a joke, and some of you have probably been flying by me at the park, but everybody has to start some place, right? :)
I have been trying to push to 18- 20 miles range lately. The past two weekends I made the mistake(?) of stopping for < 4 minutes at mile 10 (a week ago) and mile 12 (this week) to eat something -- can't do running gels :( Anyway, both times it was extremely painful to restart, or even walk after my nutrition break. I was getting tired, but it didn't particularly feel like I was wiped out when I stopped. So why can't I start again?
I tried to research this online but my choice of key words has so far returned more information about RMI & rebooting a computer than restarting after a long run. I figured I'd try here. My questions are :
- what is happening to the body when one stops? does it cool down, or is it just that the body has no energy anymore? both weeks i'd stopped at mile 5 (last week) and mile 6 (today) but restarting was no problem.
- is there a way to avoid this?
Next week my plan is to eat while run through mile 12 (the last two weeks I attempted to keep going but had to give up at miles 14 and 15, respectively :-/) Any insight, suggestions will be most appreciated.
Sorry for the long post.
