Good stuff, Larry's interview with the Merga. The English-Ethiopian translator needed a Larry-English translator!

I hate listening to him. He is the worst commentator and always making mistakes.
If you want to know what my job is like go down to your local Mandarin restaurant and try to order in Chinese.
I usually let Sheldon Cooper order for me... just wish he wouldn't order so many oxen
i think he honestly envisions his target audience as a couch potato and their 6 year old son or daughter and that he has somehow magically entranced them into the programming by telling them various background stories on various east african runners (not knowing that if anyone watching doesn't follow running they are now even more confused about who's who in the race) and that he has inpired them to go down to their local track to run a lap a X pace and if they multiply that by 5000 they will now fully appreciate how fast kipchembahersawirza is running RIGHT NOW! and in doing so, he is inspiring a generation of new runners and created a fan base of old couch potatos.
i really wish we could dig up a british or irish commentator since their accent and verbiage would entertain the 9% couch potatos watching and their ability to accurately and dramatically follow the race would be entertaining for the remaining 91% majority of runners and racing fans.
Damn everybody keeps ripping on him! I guess I never liked him that much either, he wasn't too bad in the '80's but you kind of just get sick of him. He's dull, but not as dull as Masback. Shorter is a tad better but not much.
It would be nice to have someone a little polished with some style and personality. All you have to do is call the race and comment on what's happening but you have to be interesting to listen to. I would have much preferred someone like Howard Cosell or Jim McKay even if they weren't that knowledgeable. I think Steve Ovett is the best running commentator around these days.
Keep in mind a 2 hour marathon is a long time to slip up and make mistakes.
I can't believe I'm defending the guy however his abilities are misused. Baseball, Basketball, Football, Hockey, Soccer, NASCAR, beach f**kin' volleyball. They all have a play-by-play guy and a color commentator. Larry Rawson should be the color man but he is always given the role of lead play-by-play man which he royally screws up by trying to add his own color commentary and work both roles. Al Trautwig was and is absolutely unnecessary if he is not calling the race. As far as I know the now retired John Madden never called games. Pat Summerall and most recently Al Michaels did that. Can you imagine a football game in which John Madden had to provide both the play-by-play and the color commentating?
Funny about the translator.
Larry's commentary isn't bad. I like it. But today I wanted more analysis about the women's horribly slow pace.
