I am 25, a teacher and former college runner. I was running some decent mileage over the summer and into the school year, but got caught up with teaching and taking on some extra curricular activities. I was running 40-55 MPW. I was averaging 6:45 for my runs between 4-8 miles. I enjoy pushing my long days at around 6:30 pace. I also tried to get in some "tempo" days running 6-8 miles with the last half averaging 6:00. I didn't get to do much speed work and never raced. I really felt as though i was in really good shape and just needed some "sharpening." I did not run in December, January, or February. I have been running 2-5 days a week since March as my schedule allows. The weather is getting nice (I am in the Chicago area) and i want to put in some good mileage in the summer.
My questions are:
Can i get back in college shape again?
Should i aspire to run Sub 15:30?
Should i move up to the 10k and Half marathon?
Should i can my training plan?
Some Background:
My PR's (4:10-1500 15:34-5k and 9:22 steeple) are slow compared to all the "elite" athletes that post on LetsRun. I seem to break down when i run more than 60MPW(so please don't suggest running 100MPW). My basic training plan involves a long run of 20% of my weekly mileage and one other workout (either a threshold/tempo OR intervals/fartlek.)
Thanks -- B.H.
