Everyone knows that Jim Ryun was the youngest US runner to run a 4 minute mile; who is the youngest to run a 5 minute mile? I'm guessing about 10 years of age.

a friend of mine ran a 4:51 1500 at the age of ten. he was one second off the national recoerd at the time now the national record for 10 year olds is about 4:44 or something like that
I ran a 4:55 1600m in 8th grade, which means I was 13.
i ran 5:00 in 8th grade, i was 14
I ran 4:48 when i was 13
The (I believe still standing) school record at my junior high when I was there was 4:45 set by Ed Pole (not entirely sure of the spelling) which he ran as a 13 year old. The coach of the team claimed that he had run 4:56 the year before - as a 12 year old. Seems believable
So who would be the youngest girl to run 5 or faster?
My 12-13 year old time was 5:19 so I know there must be faster

Probably Mary Decker. I remember watching Nicole Blood run 4:50 as an 8th grader at AOCs 2 years ago.
i went 4:48 in 8th grade. I think there are about 25-50 kids nationwide in that range every year for sure.
too bad i havent broken 4:30 yet and I'm a junior...
Luchini from stanford i think ran under 5 in 6th or 7th grade. 11-13 maybe?
Two posts up, not an age-group record site
I think I remember reading in one of the old Footlocker progams that Brian Damesworth (sp?) ran under 4:30 as an 8th grader
Sandy Roberts from NC ran 4:28 indoors as an 8th grader in the winter of 2002, but he only improved his time by 2 seconds as a freshman to 4:26. Expect him to try and go about 4:18 this year as a sophomore though.
That last time is a prediction, I have no insight into his training.
1500 m 4:48.04 Connor Revord Joliet, IL Sacramento, CA 7/29/01 Boy's-Bantam (10 and under i believe)
this is not sub-5, but it is right around it

best I've found: 4:37.4 1500 (=4:59.7? mile),age 10 - John Soto(Ca),1980. 4:24.34 (=4:45 mile?),Andrew O'Neill(Aus),11, 1995. 4:26.68(=4:48?) Jeff Perry(US),11, 1983.
..and,.. was Tony Perez(Wa) 11 or 12 when he ran 4:22.58 1500, July '80, Eugene, NJrOly?
i heard of this kid jason rexing that ran 4:21 as an unborn fetus.
Ryan Deak? didn't he run 4:26 in middle school?
That seems likes it was true since he would go out like a mad dog at Mt. Sac in the 4:30's for the first mile during his freshmen year. Too bad the college system chewed him up and spit him out.
