the high school marathon record is a very soft record, i mean a 17 year old chinese girl ran 2:22.
that lukas verzikas (unsure or spelling) might be able to break it now as a freshmen.
Bradman has already been mentioned. Twice as good as any of his era.
Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting etc might be nearly equal to him in skill but they have had to compete at a higher level than he did back in the 30s and 40s.
Kipketer's 800m record is getting old, the only 2 runners close to him are Coe and Cruz from the 80s. El G's 1500 and mile times are well beyond any of the current top guys on their recent form.
Komen's 3000m remains well out of reach. Bekele's 5 and 10 are also well out of reach at the moment.
Flo Jo's 100 looks pretty safe for the next few decades unless some breakthrough occurs. Her 200 will stretch them for a long time too.
Koch's 400 time looks way beyond any current runner, I don't think anyone got within 2 secs of it last season.

I thought Carter's record was safe forever too until this NJ kid came along, 70+ already as a soph. It's no lock he'll get 81, but he's got a shot, which I never envisioned before.
Unlike any other record posted so far, every kid going for that record has a "shot"?

Mike was doing *lots* of things right on those throws, but I think it's particularly instructive to watch his right leg.

I also like how he knew, the instant it left his hand, that the last throw was The Big One. Often "big" throws feel funny ("it slipped off my hand" is a typical comment)--to the extent that one of my throwers intentionally fouled a put that would have been nearly a two-foot PR, because it didn't feel right.
His last throw obviously felt "right" to Carter!

That was 2632 consecutive starts right? Thats 16+ seasons...no injuries... just incredible.

I second this. No current athlete has the commitment to even go half as many straight games. Ripken Jr.'s record will never be broken.
