Chetelat is underrated... she will be very, very good but to compare her with Flanagan and Goucher who have both gone sub 15...and Barringer who should go sub 15 soon...

granted, none of them ran as fast as she has at her age.

and if I am correct, all ran distance all through high school and maybe before (flanagan, barringer). As i understand it Chetelat only ran 11th and 12th grades(?) after being a soccer player. So, with less than three years of formal distance training under her belt, she drops a 15:42. That's ballin!

Similar to Wheating, Chetelat came from a soccer background. She made the permanent switch to running her junior year.

She is already at #2 on the American junior lists, not too far behind Junior record set by Molly Huddle. At the Cardinal Invite in May, I really think she could get down to around 15:30 considering the improvements she has made.

Just a PHENOMENAL mark for a FRESHMAN! Shalane Flanagan should also be going for the American Record in the 5k at Cardinal.

You need to get out more. You are stuck in the Oregon fantasy land. But, I will grant you that one of the four might well be on the 2012 team in the 5k. Which one is anybody's guess, they are all good runners.

But you are rushing to bury a lot of very good Americans - such as Flannagan, Rhines, Goucher, Slattery, Barringer, Willard, Huddle, Yoder-Begley - but you and your Oregon friends may find out that they are not ready to roll over and play dead. Not by a long shot. You will find that there are other players in the game and they are not in awe of a 15:42 5K.

How does this have to do with "Oregon fantasy land"?? Chetelat goes to STANFORD, and grew up in CALIFORNIA. No connection to Oregon at all. Hasay grew up in California and is not in Oregon yet. Lambie is from Massachusetts and went to school at Stanford, only now is she in Oregon (okay, I'll give that... considering she's training with AlSal).

To address your points... Flanagan has said

1) that the 5k/10k double is far too much and she doesn't want to do it again

2) She will stay around 10k (or 5k) for 1-2 years, and then most likely move up to the marathon... so she will probably be up there by 2012

3) Goucher has moved to the marathon

4) Rhines will probably move to the marathon... or 10k... she is already over 30

5) Willard is a steepler

6) Yoder Begley is a 10k runner

The ones that ARE there are Slattery, Fleshman, and Huddle. I admit overlooking Huddle, she should be in the mix. But who knows, these athletes may have moved to the 10k by then.

And 15:42 as a FRESHMAN in your DEBUT 5k is what makes it very impressive. And there are still months to go in the season.

According to this, the American junior record is 15:51 by Suzie Taffey. However, I believe that has not been updated and Huddle holds the record... Chetelat is #2 all time and not too far off.

She's African, not American.

Lovely and talented ladies, all of whom could be a factor. But if you're putting all of them ahead of Jenny Barringer after her 15:01 indoor 5000-meter all-time (indoor or outdoor) record, you are smoking icebergs made of 100% crack.

barringer may stick with the steeple for 2012, just a guess.

Only two of your points are even correct.

What is Chetelat's heritage? Is she of African decent? She doesn't look that African to me.

She is of French descent I believe... her last name is pronounced "Shay-tuh-lah".

I saw her run something like two years ago, and her form is just amazing. She immediately stood out to me because of her smooth and efficient form, and I had an instinct that she would be very good some day.

I just saw her picture. She can be considered a real American.
