I have my two cents to put in, just like usual. These tools are great and I think that it is fantastic that we have the technology to have such gadgets to regulate our daily quantities and intensities of exercise. Nike and Timex are obviously your best bet. You can buy different models with different downloadable features, graphs, chronos., and timers (as I'm sure you know) for on average $200 for a good one. At the same time, I think that if you buy one of these products, you should not just become dependent on them. Like if you buy a distance monitor, yeah, you know exactly how far you ran, up to the hundreth of a mile....but at the same time, where is the "spontaneousness" of a run where you don't know how far you ran, but know that it was in the neighborhood of some distance, "x".
I know that it might sound like I'm lecturing here, but I know from my own experience that I once timed every single run....and had the distance down to the nearest 1/10 of a mile as I could get. Running got to the point where it wasn't fun and "fresh" to do this and know exactly what I just finished accomplishing. I'm not saying that you will do this, but just warning you. If you buy one of these devices, just make sure to leave it at home every now and then :)
Sorry, again, if it sounded like a lecture.
I've got the Timex Speed + Distance and I like it. The GPS unit is a little heavy, but you get used to it. I only use it to measure my regular runs. Once I've measured a course a couple of times, then I don't wear the unit. If it's raining or really overcast, the GPS will lose the signal from the satellite and that's a bummer. But I very rarely have any problems with the unit on non-rainy days. Make sure you keep the batteries fresh. It's a drag when the unit dies in the middle of a run.
I hear that Garmin has a one piece product that you wear on your wrist. I'm interested in trying it out, it retails for $160, but I've seen it for $130 online. Since Garmin makes the GPS part of the Timex product, I'm pretty sure their new product will work well.
I once ran 6400 meters on a track and my Timex S+D measured it as 6409 meters. Pretty darn accurate. Then Nike product is not GPS based and is much more inaccurate.
Hope that helps.
That's it... I think it will sell. The big disadvantage with the Timex S+D is that the arm GPS unit was pretty heavy. Garmin seems to have solved that problem and you can hook it up to your PC and download data... something the Timex S+D doesn't offer.

Hehe. That's cute. No Nike product even uses GPS technology... They are really just fancy pedometers. So, the may "rule", but they aren't the most accurate.
