How much time does it take to get to Palo Alto during rush hour traffic if I leave from San Francisco State and take Highway 280? I assume the 101 is a pain to deal with, so I want to avoid that.

One hour should be fine, even in rush hour. You can jump on 280 fairly easily from SF State. The only slow spot will be once you get off 280 and weave your way to the track through Stanford. You might be better off going through campus than all the way down to El Camino past the mall.
It would take one hour by motorcycle if you split lanes at 70 MPH and survived. By car, getting from SF State to 280 takes half the total trip time, and everyone will be going in the same direction as you.
Nah if you did that you get sub to 45 min.If I had to be there, I would give 2 hours. If I want to be there I would give about 75 min (+-5 depending on where your parked at SFSU). If I really didn't care I would say an hour and see how things work out.Besides google says you can do it in 38mins...

Take the Caltrain! It's cheap and easy. It will drop you off right down the road from the track. It's maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 mile walk. Make sure after the meet you go to the Nuthouse bar...the only cool dive bar in town.
you could do it in 38 mins at 3 a.m. also the OP asked how long from Frisco State to PA, not to Cobb Track.

CT sucks. CT is slow. CT is always late. CT kills a dozen bystanders and has may suicides every year. The track is also used for freight and so people often take Caltrain when they have a toothache in lieu of paying a dentist to extract the bad tooth.
You need to work on your sarcasm detector. I am sure the Cal train guy was joking also. Getting from SFSU to caltrain would take an 45 or so mins to begin with and I am guessing that is at least 3 bus/muni links.

On a good day (no accidents, etc.) you could get from SF to Palo Alto in under an hour and 15 minutes during rush hour. Problem is you can't count on that.
CalTrain is a viable option. I used to take CalTrain from Palo Alto to San Jose every day for a year and a half, and I went to SF a lot too on it. GREAT.
