race resume

I put one of these together to get elite status in my recent marathon. I basically formatted the thing like I would a true resume. As far as times go....I only posted my PR's for each distance, plus the date and location of that race. I had another section of running "awards" such as first place here and All conference there, but didn't put any times in that section.

Yes, I too keep one for comp'd entries.

I start off with a bio. Talk about how I started running, college running, post college.

Then move into goals, both short term and long term.

Then have recent (past 12-18 months) race results.

Then have a upcoming schedule and goal times.

If you are a recent graduate and your times aren't great or you've yet to tackle a marathon you just accentuate the positive when it comes to how many races you've won or conference titles you hold or mention your All-American status.

If you are serious about a professional career, set up a website or be linked to your sponsors website and have something that they can see online or can easily be faxed or snail mailed.

add in a list of races you've won...even if they're crappers if it gets long it looks good

I recruit and contract US and foreign athletes for a large road race in the United States and regardless of individual, I request the following for media and verification purposes:

Name and Date of Birth

Current residence

Coach and agent (if applicable)include your college if recently graduated.

email, phone, address

In this order of importance:

PR's over multiple distances and disciplines (road & track)WITH YEAR AND LOCATION ACHIEVED

Top results for the last 2 years (very important)

Any and all victories.

Additional achievements in racing (All-American, All-conference, etc)

No photos. I request a photo if I need it.

Think of it this way-if you aren't already a recognizable name, this is your chance to impress the elite athlete manager. You should be the one placing your race highlights in front of him or her. Just like a job application. And remember, if you are invited to be an elite, you are now considered a "professional" athlete and are expected to be a representative of your support organization or school as well as the race.

I don't care about how you started running or your goals. Your goal should be to run as fast as possible and more importantly try to place high in the race for which you are asking a comp. I don't want a guy who is in the middle of a 140 mile week getting ready for a marathon. Obviously if you are preparing for a marathon, things vary slightly. Marathons care slightly what you THINK you can run, but they really care about what you HAVE run.

We all know what your long term goal is: run fast and win. qualify for the Trials. etc, etc.

The schedule of your current races is an ok idea, though. Sometimes that is helpful.
