staight up, you're bnetter just buying a heart rate monitor for what you're wanting to use it for. You seem to be wanting to monitor intensity, which would be better done by measuring HR rather than speed.

btw, if you realy want to get a SDM, take a look at the Timex one. It works on GPS and an arm band instead of a foot pod

I have had the SDM since last Xmas and love it. It works great and is very accurate on all but the gnarliest trails. It is nice for tempo stuff as you can see accurate mile splits on any course you choose... Another cool feature is setting it to take auto-splits... say every 400m for example... then, after a 6 mile tempo run, you can see exactly where in the run your pace varied... how hills affected you, etc. I think the SDM can be a very valuable training tool...

Heart Rate Monitor, whatever. Your a runner man, and doing 75 plus miles a week, just listen to your body and save the money.

As much as I like to call myself a purest, I had the opportunity to sample the Timex SDM with GPS technology. I was pretty impressed. I tried wearing the unit clipped on my shorts in the small of my back. It seemed to be more comfortable than around my arm. Timex claims the reception might not be good on your waist, but I didn't have any problems with it. Pretty amazing toy. Being out on a trail run and knowing minutes per mile and distance travelled was great. I'm sure the size and price will come down in a few years too.

I won't buy one, but for all the "Techie Geeks" (ie. triathletes) out there, I'm sure they will be very popular.

Well I'm not really considering the Timex one because I think the arm band will be way too annoying, probably even moreso if I put it on the back of my shorts. The foot pod seems less obtrusvie. I have a HRM, and after reading some stuff by Jack Daniels and having used it a bit, I'm convinced that a heart rate monitor measures your body's reaction to stress, rather than the stress itself (the pace) which the SDM would monitor. This can vary based on weather, lack of sleep, etc. If anyone else has any more comments I would be most appreciative. Thanks for what you've posted so far.
