Can someone tell me what a decent 400m time is for a midle school boy (7th grade) who is just starting track?
Thanks.

Under one minute.
1:10-1:20 is my guess.
Sub 1 minute or 70-80 range.
Who's right?
What kind of trout?
Under 70 seconds would be a decent/solid time for a 7th grader. Anything under 60 would be quite good. I would at least hope that he is under 80.
Over 60 is not a good time for anybody.
under 57 is excellent
58 to 62 is solidly competitive
62 to 66 is probably slow leg of a relay team or B team status.
67 to 72 on the outside is not bad for someone who has no training. If you have a boy in this range with no training, have them run a 100 and 200 to determine speed talent. double the 200 time and add about 6 seconds to determine what they should be able to run with decent training in a relatively short period of time.
Of course, these are generalities based on my experience.
Under 70 is decent; low 60's is very good. A lot depends on the size/age of the kid... some 7th graders have already had some of the growth spurt most boys get in 8th or 9th grade, in which case under 60 is possible. But a relatively small to average 7th grader under 65 has potential.
