Teacher
prestige or importance?
prestige is how a profession is perceived by the general public... importance is how, well, important a profession actually is in that society.
you could probably be pretty accurate with prestige if you list by highest potential income. importance is trickier and there's more room for debate.
for instance, a teacher probably has low prestige (low potential for income) but a high importance level (depending on social priorities).
my importance ranking:
doctor
teacher
police
engineer
business owner
lawyer
banker
military
salesman
marketing
i would add artist/writer/thinker to the list, and it would be pretty high in importance. i would also add politician, and it would be pretty low in importance.
he said "prestige" not "importance." So in the USA i'd say:
1. Doctor
2. Lawyer
3. Banker
4. Business Owner
5. Engineer
6. Marketing
7. Salesman
8. Military
9. Police
10. Teacher
1. Writer
2. Professor
3. Engineer
4. Military
5. Entrepreneur
6. Police
For me, doctors are very low in terms of prestige.

Depends on the business. If I have built an adult bookstore empire people will not view me in a very good light despite having done very well for myself.

I'll agree with you if you change "potential" to "typical." Otherwise professional lottery player is at the top of the prestige list.
Writer!? Haha

Somebody has authority issues. Abandoned by your dad?
Not a metro reporter, but a successful novelist would be in my top 5 as well.

I agree with this one, though I might move lawyer up some.
I don't think the majority of Americans today think highly of the military, the police, and most of all, bankers and financial professionals.
