Hear me out on this one.
From what I have gathered, Withrow's mile PR was the slowest in the field at Nationals. Hell, both my mile PR and twomile PR were a lot better than his in high school (up to this point), and I was nowhere close to qualifying for cross nationals.
Y'see, he has proven that you do not need to have a faster mile time than your opponent to beat him in a 5k. He OUTKICKED a guy who's mile PR (or equivilant) is 26 SECONDS faster than his. Obviously, this is not a fluke. He beat everyone fair and square.
Everyone on this board that thinks our American up-and-comers (Ritz, Hall, etc.) will never be able to compete internationally are missing the point. While the best 5k runners in the world have ridiculously fast PR's in pretty much every event, that does not mean that you have to have a nasty mile PR BEFORE you can be fast in other events. Withrow proves that you do not have to have the best mid-distance PR's to be competitive with a high-class field over 5k.
Ritz's mile PR, for example, is just over 4 minutes. Does this mean he is screwed in an international 5k? Hardly. He never races the mile. Who knows what he could run if he concentrated on the mile- it doesn't matter. What matters is being able to hold a fast pace and kick off of it.
For all the nay-sayers, explain to me this: how could Withrow win nationals in a kick when his mile PR is so slow? His two mile time isn't that fantastic, either. How did he do it?!?
Your turn, naysayers.
