I did say \"According to TNFN\" in the original post.
I do think the magazine tends to be wishy washy on some things.
That fact that they even ranked Kanouchi last year in the AOY voting shows that they consider road racing although they wouldn\'t rank him #1.
Records are subjective. Look at the 100m record.
Montgomery had a 1.0 s reaction and 2.0 m/s tailwind. Slightly quicker reaction would have been \"ruled\" a false start and a little more of a breeze would have put him behind Obadele Thompson\'s 9.69 wind-aided best.
What if Ryun started his race at 11:58 Aug 31 and finished it 12:02 Sep 1. Would his time be considered a high school record then?
The fact is, Ryun was a high school graduate when he ran 3:55.
Webb was still a high school student when he ran his 3:53(but ran against pro\'s).
One more fact: Ryun did break the world record in the mile eventually and that was not subject to any quirky interpretations. The greatest US miler ever in my opinion and I doubt I will get much of a fight about that.
