I'm asking for the middle distances - 800 and 1500.
On the one hand, races are more taxing than workouts (or they should be if you're not overtraining). But in workouts you can do a greater volume at race pace, stuff like 8x400 and 10x400 at mile race pace.
Also, most people tend to take a few days easy prior to a race, whereas with workouts it might just be one easy day. So the weekly running volume is going to be greater during a week with no races as opposed to a week with races.
Given all that, and within the context of a training week, do races or workouts advance your fitness more?
