Everyone knows that there are three different bodytypes, endomorph, mesomorph, and ectomorph. Most people are a mix of two or even three, but I'm an extreme endomorph.
I'm short, broad shoulders and hips, gain fat very easily, and lose conditioning very quickly.
Endos are more suited to power sports like powerlifting where lots of strength is required. They are the least suited for running.
Now I know that I can still get pretty fast if I stick with running, but I feel like I could get the same feelings I get from running with lifting. I hate training wether it be running or lifting, but I do love breaking PRs and improving which is why I do these things. I don't really have a "love" for running like other people, if I didn't race I would just do some cardio and lifting to stay healthy, i would never just go out for a jog, it's pretty damn boring.
Thing is, lifting has the satisfaction aspect (lift a new weight), it's what I'm suited for, and it also lets me look better (let's be honest, the skinny runner guy isn't desired).
However, I posted this same question on a lifting forum and got an interesting answer from one person. He said to not be slogging through all the hard miles and such but instead to train fast and weight lift. He reasoned that if you don't go for 15+ mile long runs every week or 8-10 everday that you wouldn't lose that much muscle. Instead, do 30 mins fast (not tempo pace but not easy either) and do workouts like fartleks and hills. This would allow me to still lift and gain muscle and get fast. Also, possibly race the shorter distances like 800m/mile.
There's one last thing that still keeps me wondering if I should just stick with running. Though my body type isn't suited for it, I still remember a 10 mile run (long for me, I was only doing maybe 35 mpw at the time) where I just felt so smooth. It was a 5 mile loop which I neg splitted for the two loops and ended up only running 30sec slower than my 5k pace and it felt pretty easy. I felt it over the next week but ever since I've always wondered if I should train for longer races like the half marathon and marathon. I notice that the longer the workout is, the better I get comparatively. In HS (I'm a college freshman now, not on any team though), we would do something like 4x(400,400, 800) and in the first two 400s I would get killed by my teammates and stay even in the 800. However, later in the sets, I would start blowing by them in the second lap of the 800 though I barely changed my effort level. It seems I can last longer than most people, but I wonder if this is due to my higher-mileage training during base when they barely ran at all. And, they still smoked me in every race.
So letsrun, what's your opinion? I think I might go with the compromise route and lift + eat a LOT + train hard and fast for running.
