It is considered good manners for men to hold doors for women, but I find the reverse often does not happen. There are, of course, women who are polite enough to hold the door for a man, but many do not. Why is this? Do these women just not care about showing some courtesy to the other sex? It just amazes how inconsiderate some people can be.
Holding doors for people is stupid.
I hold doors open for whoever, male or female, if I am the first one to the door. The guys will sometimes (almost always) grab the door and say "no, you go ahead." Seems pointless when I am already standing there holding the door open for them.
Same here. I hold the door for anyone, but especially older folks who might get slammed in it.
At least in some places I've lived, that kind of courtesy--shown by a woman to a man--would likely get her an unwanted come-on. So the woman won't do a courteous favor for a man she doesn't know (at least, a man of the age group that most frequently hits on women they're not acquainted with).
Similarly, if a panhandler asks for change and I at least acknowledge his existence--giving him a smile and a shrug, indicating that I don't have any to spare--more often than not I get a pleasant word and a smile in return.
A woman who did the same thing would probably get hard words in return, so the woman can't acknowledge the panhandler's existence as a human being. She has to pretend he's not there, ignoring him completely.
That kinda sucks, but it's the reality...
Women almost always hold the door open for me. Maybe I look non-threatening, I do sort of have a "baby face". Hell if I know.
When I am carrying my baby (I am a man), women frequently hold the door open. Probably more than men but I don't really keep a count. Many women go out of there way to help.

Are people (men and women) just entirely incapable of opening their own doors? I think the most annoying thing in the world is when women bitch about men who don't hold doors or they swoon about and say "I want a man who holds door for me." Why the obsession? Please don't tell me men are now involved in this to.

The answer is simple- women are attracted to men who hold doors open, so the act has become associated with men displaying their masculinity.
I don't think it has anything to do with women being impolite, it's just human behavior.
