Does anyone have the progression in the American Record for men's 5000m? I thought it would be easier for me to find, but I guess not.
Thanks.............

Do any oldtimers know where in Sunnyvale, CA a record run would have been made? Fremont High School? Can't imagine there were many tracks around at that time. Seems strange to me.

Why do people make such a big deal about Pre if he never broke 13:20 and never won an Olympic medal?
Because he broke the AR in the 5000m five times and held every American record from 2000m-10,000m and did not reach his potential.
The appreciation of Pre is that there was a great chance of a medal in Montreal in 1976 and faster times, perhaps in the 13:15-range by '76 and perhaps a 27:20-something for 10,000m, as he moved up in distance, not to mention what else he would run over 3000m.
Give the man his due. One of our best ever.
Great, thanks guys.
all i can say that is bill dellinger is way underated.
Who the hell is Duncan McDonald?!

If you ran track back then, you would know. If you're from the MySpace generation, you wouldn't.
Im not a huge Pre fan, but for you to ask that question shows you're clueless.
Just looking at malmos list shows you he was the real deal. consistent improvement and the best US runner for at least 4 yrs.
He does deserve that credit.

Yes, here it is:
.
Macdonald!
His dad was a Vulcanologist. Duncan was born on the Big Island. He turns 60 in a couple of weeks.
HI state record holder in the mile (4:11?) Kailua H.S.
He was teammates with Don Kardong at Stanford in the late 60's.
Sub 4 minute miler
'76 Olympian
3-Time winner of the Honolulu Marathon
http://honolulumarathon.org/?s=halloffame
Ran a 2:13 marathon at Boston in 1983
Medical doctor and anesthesiologist at Queens Hospital
Coaches at Punahou H.S.
Father to Eri & Pippa (two former PAC-10 D1 runners)
Lives in Lanikai...
Oh, yeah and American Record Holder at 5km after Pre died.
Maybe Orville would know or some other historian...
I know we had to deal with the depression in the 1930's and WWII in the 40's, but what happened between 1932 and 1950?
Didn't we compete in Berlin in '36 and London in '48?
And it took until 1950 for Fred Wilt to break the record?
14:26.8 Fred Wilt (NY) 29 Jun 1950 Helsinki FIN
14:30 Ralph Hill (CA) 05 Aug 1932 Los Angeles CA/USA
Who's going to beat Bob's (coming up on 13 years) record?

Which reminds me, by a natural and easy transition, that Fred Wilt is definitely on the list of finalists for "Runners who got the most out of their abilities."
Fred gave back so much to the sport. When he stopped editing "Track Technique" magazine, I just dropped him a post card, thanking him for all his years of helping to elevate American coaches' knowledge of The Sport. Man, he sent me back a letter and everything, and I realized how little positive feedback he must have gotten for all that labor.
I hadn't remembered that it was he who finally broke Hill's record. My thanks to y'all for the reminder.
And PLEASE will somebody break Kennedy's record before 2014?
US runners did compete in the 1936 and 1948 Olympics but they did not break any 5K records. Don Lash was 13th in the 5K in 1936. I have no time for him. He ran 15:04.4 in his heat. Lash was also 8th in the 10K in 31:39.4 in Berlin. Lash won 7 AAU cross country championships plus a 5K AAU and two 10K US titles. In 1936 he broke Paavo Nurmi's 2 mile world record running 8:58.4.
Curtis Stone ran in the 1948 Olympic 5K placing 6th in 14:39.4. He also ran in the 1952 and 1956 Olympics. Stone won gold medals in the 10K and steeplechase in the 1951 Pan Am Games and placed 4th in the 1,500. He won 13 AAU Championships.
Thanks for the MacDonald information. I started competing in '77, but I don't remember ever hearing of him.

Gotta love a story like this. Here's a guy, a sub-4:00 miler, Olympian, and 5k runner ahead of his time) who didn't let running define him and consume him and who moved on with his life, giving back to humanity. I can think of so many guys in their late 20s/early 30s that would have done well to take a page from this playbook.
Part of the reason for the big gap may be that the US predominantly ran the 3 mile during that time. So someone would have to dig out the US 3 mile record progression. Anyone?
