It's a very old trick. I don't know the origins, but it really does work.Trouble Urinating(the medical term is urinary hesitance or retention)You may feel your bladder is full and have the urge to urinate, but have trouble getting the urine to start flowing. Once the urine starts to flow, you may notice that it comes out more slowly than usual, as though there is no force behind it. As a result, it may take much longer than usual to empty your bladder. Fortunately, this is usually a temporary problem that disappears on its own in a week or two. If you have this problem, report it to your doctor or nurse. And in the meantime, let water run in the sink while you're trying to urinate or immerse your hand in a cup or sink full of warm water. Either trick may help the urine start flowing. If you are unable to pass urine at all (this is rare, but it does happen), let your doctor or nurse know right away.

If you're having trouble letting the yellow river flow then try an old trick. Carry a really warm, but not too hot, water in a bottle big enough for your hand to easily fit in. When you need to pee, but can't, just stick your hand in the bottle and think of rushing water or a waterfall. Get a good visual, and also imagine the sound the water makes, relax your muscles and your problem should be solved.
Is that a quote from Waiting?
