WOW, U.S. Steeple talent worse than it was 25 years ago.

Malmo's time from 25 years ago would STILL put him as the #2 US steepler in the US list for 2008. Yikes!
-
The list is Wrong Olinger ran 8:19 late in the summer
-
uhh....that hardly negates the correct observation of the OP.
-
Some of the 2nd tier 1500 and 5k runners should start steepling. They may make a name for themselves.
-
same observation would apply to any event >400
800 times - top times all posted at or before OTs...????
with a few exceptions, this was the case in every event.
Marathon - I can't remember when the depth was this weak. #3 is 2:13? Did everybody just decide to skip the marathon this year? 23 individuals under 2:20? Is this correct? -
Whoa...an 8:32 puts you in the US top ten? In an Olympic year? Jeeeebus.
I'm one of the people who thought that Webb (assuming he didn't do triathlon, in which he'd kill everyone) should move to steeple. You don't have to be tall to be successful in the event, and he's certainly athletic enough to handle the barriers... -
In a recent interview Solinsky mentioned trying the steeple in '09.
-
If you think that's bad, take a look at the men's marathon list for 2008. Looks like a year out of the 1990s.
-
24 males under 2:20 for the entire year.

You're wrong. Olinger's 8:19 was in 2007.
-
The US steeple was bad, but the steeple overall in the world was also pretty bad depth-wise. some events go through down years before building up again.
-
In what way was the world list down?

compare it to previous years like the original poster did instead of cutting and pasting stuff without using your brain to reason about things. this isn't rocket science. Here's a start: only one guy under 8:06?? - that's DOWN.

Some of the 2nd tier 1500 and 5k runners should start steepling. They may make a name for themselves.
that's exactly why they haven't switched to the steeple. you don't make a name for yourself running 8:20 unless 'making a name for yourself' includes some letsrun nerds talking about you... ala brian olinger (no offense to him) -
Good intereview with Olinger in the last week, He has a good reason why US times are so down:

The interviewer, Peter Gambaccini, is consistently awful.

Look for Fam to move on to 10k, and then you have 6 guys, all with PRs under 8:22 for 3 spots for Worlds team.
Alcorn, McAdams, Slatts, Nelson, Huling, and Olinger. That is as much depth as the event has ever had in this country. If Lincoln returns and Fam stays, its our deepest, best event. -
Not to go off on a tangent, but look at this comment at the bottom of that runnersworld article
Why don't you make me athlete of the year? I'm only 15 years old. And i already ran my first marathon this year. I'm sure that any of these athletes did not run a marathon at the age of 15! If not me i would pick Haile Gebrselassie. That dude is a tank!

US runners have been left behind by the (mostly) African runners, years ago. You need to be under 8:10 these days, to even be a factor.
