Generally, if it relates to news, no release is necessary. Also, most events include a release of use of images in their waiver. It varies in who is permitted to use, and how. If the story is unrelated to news of some type, a release and/or payment might be in order. I am not a lawyer, so this may not be exactly correct, but I believe it to be generally correct.
If you were pictured, you should likely be pleased, because you were in an important place at an important time. As far as getting cash, not likely.
