I went to a talk given by Lydiard in Pittsburgh in the late 1970s. Someone asked him why his shoes cost so much. He admitted that they were expensive and that he didnt know why the cost was high but that he would look into it.

I had a pair of these too.
I had the pleasure of meeting Arthur at the Copenhagen Championships in the late 70's.
He was a real gentleman, class act all the way.
Nobby,
Have you ever run in a pair of Dreske running shoes ?
Nobby
I read somewhere that Lydiard once did work as shoemaker. True or false. Thanks

That's definitely true.
CAN I PLEASE HAVE MY SHOES BACK!?

I had 4 pairs of Lydiard shoes in the mid to late 70s. Wearing them for marathon-conditioning was like running with bricks on my feet. But, they were great as an everyday shoe and I wore them for nearly 5 years.
I had a pair of the Lydiard shoes, which were too soft, made my feet hurt, and were no lighter than the other running shoes that I wore. There was something weird about the insole, that wasn't flat and stuck up into the middle of my foot.
I did run several marathons in the tiger jawhawks, after removing the insoles, the leather trim, and drilling holes in the outsoles, and a ran a marathon in the reebok world class model, after removing the insoles from those.
I never ran much in the Lydiard shoes though, and would rather run barefoot.
Mail ordered a pair of Ron Hill racing flats back in the day, big mistake, literally shockers, give me the modern shoe anyday.
Photo of 'em here:
Had the Ron Hill "World 10" orange flats, and a pair of "2:07" purple flats. They looked similar to old Reeboks, very minimalist.
Hi Skwillli,
One of my best friends is a grandchild of Arthur and I'm looking to get my hands on a pair of his shoes as a gift.
Any chance those old runners are still kicking around the basement?
Thanks
Ian
You could still order the shoes from EB, at least as of a year or so ago. I used to have a link. I'll look, no guarantees, and put it here if I find it.
I ran in the Lydiard equinox shoes at Boston in 1986. They were my favorite racing shoes ever.
