Start at the stagger and do them in lane 2,3,4,5,6,7, or even 8.

Better yet just run around them. It better simulates actual race conditions. Do you think you'll be competing against yourself during a race?

Actually I can't remember the last time I had to run around people in my lane in a 400

Yes but it's unlikely you'd be doing 400 repeats if you're training for a 400 race right quack?
I usually race against fat, middle aged walkers, so that would perfectly simulate race conditions for me.
New solution?!? I wouldn't bother sending in that patent application.
That is actually how I have always done 400 repeats. I start on the lane 8 stagger, then go to the lane 7 stagger. Not sure why, but I do them alone a lot and it seems to keep them from getting too boring.
WHAT AN IDEA!!! wrote:

Oh that it were just that simple. Many times I've encountered tracks where the walkers are four abreast in several groups across all lanes and they become particularly violent when I alternate ccw repeats to avoid injury. More than once a jerk has elbowed me in the chest as I passed whether from the front or behind; causing me to make threats more appropriate to a seedy bar at closing time.
