So I know this is overly simplistic but why can't the following work assuming I have the ability and dedication to become an elite marathoner.
Currently I run about 80 miles per week on 13 runs as follows:
1 long run of 16 miles with 3 @ MP
1 Tempo run of 6-8 miles at MP to 5 second faster
1 Speed workout of 4 x 1 mile w 400 jog recovery
4 Easy runs of 6-8 miles
6 secondary runs of 4-6 miles
Every 18-24 weeks I will run a marathon and then after a 2-3 weeks recovery from that marathon I will boost my weekly mileage by 10 miles per week over what I did before the last marathon. (i.e 80 this cycle, 90 next cycle, 100 the following cycle, etc.)
I will repeat this until I reach the following weekly training schedule (about 130-135 miles):
1 long run of 24 miles with 4-6 @ MP
1 Tempo run of 9-12 miles at MP to 5 second faster
1 Speed workout of 6 x 1 mile w 400 jog recovery
4 Easy runs of 9-12 miles
6 secondary runs of 6-8 miles
This process will take 2-3 years to get to the end schedule.
