It depends on the school. Some are more strict than others about this.
Usually they are stricter about spikes than trainers. I know that at some schools the athletic dept. will buy you another brand of shoes if the sponsored brand has a history of getting you injured.

my team would buy me other shoes if you whined about it enough. i didn't bother, as i had no problem with nike, but a few others did.
