So yeah, obviously Wardian is a beast, basically running every race in town whether it's a 10k or a full marathon, and no problem if that means doing 2 marathons on two consecutive days or 6 marathons in a month. Oh yeah, and he's also one of the best 100km ultra runners in the world.
But his training, when you read about it, seems pretty much normal marathon-runner stuff. 100-110 mpw, most days being either an 11/7 double or 16 in one run, 20 mile long runs with the last 5-10 at marathon pace, 5-mile tempos at 5:00 pace, and some track intervals.
So is his ability pretty much totally genetic? I mean seriously, there is nothing extraordinary about that training program. That probably describes the training of pretty much every 2:16-2:22 marathon runner in the country, of which there are about 100. But the other 99 guys definitely couldn't do this crazy racing schedule, and probably couldn't really run much of a 100km effort either. All other human beings who are at all competitive at 100km need the typical ultra-runner schedule of back-to-back 3-5 hour runs every weekend for at least a month or two leading up to the race.
