Not sure if read today's recap of the Kenyan XC meet on the IAAF site. In it, it says that the race winner Edwin Soi (bronze in 5k at Olympics) won the race after "surviving a penalty from organisers after shedding off his singlet" in the middle of the race.
My question is does anyone know what the penalty was? Was anyone there? Did they make him pause mid-race, did they add time to his finish?
I've never heard anything like this.

are you serious you have never heard of this, if you take off your racing uniform in a race you are disqualified, he most likely was dqed (which was the penalty) and told after the race and then for some reason they reversed the decision. Should have dqed him and stuck it, alot of disrespect to take off your singlet in the middle of a race.

I don't know, the phrase "surviving a penalty" really seems to imply something different than a dq. if he was originally dqed they probably would have said that in the article

disrespectful to who or what? i think the idea of a mandatory singlet is silly. they do not use them in swimming? the use them in amateur boxing but not the pro's. etc. etc. etc.
it is an arbitrary rule, at best.

Why would he take it off though?
obviously it was raining and got too heavy.
ever think the usatf will allow us to compete in championship ROAD races without shirts? granted, its at the discretion of the race director. but hell, it gets damn hot in july. i was barred from continuing a multi-hour event in 90 degree weather when i tried to get comfortable. guess the bloody nipple stains on my singlet were much more "respectful".
If you are good enough to get banned for not wearing a shirt you probably should wear the shirt. Back of the packers dont matter and are there to fund the race for people who care.
i'll remind you of that when you poop your pants at mile 20 and it slings all over your singlet, or your nipples get raw.
it actually doesn't make sense to take off a singlet during a race, or during a run for that matter. there was an article in the new yorker this summer about ryan hall, and it reported that the body is cooled most effectively when it has a wicking material on it, then no shirt, and then a cotton shirt - in that order.

It might have been a problem if he had a bib number attached to the singlet.
