I do not understand. The Virginia men were ranked #14 last week in the national poll. They won the ACC meet beating NC State and Florida State who remain ranked this week, yet Virginia drops OUT of the top 30. Meanwhile they remain the top ranked team in the Southeast Region. WTF is that about?

It only goes to show that ranking does not matter, all that matters is who does what at the National Championships. Which, Rupp and Oregon are going to win.
WTF is right!!!! They easily beat Florida State who came in fourth in the ACC's this past weekend; NC state was second 16 points behind. This has to be a mistake or it means that the national ratings are totally bogus. Any explanation would be welcome - logic, stats, common sense - give me something to explain!
They got unlucky one way or another; I think that they should be ranked an unlucky 13th. Conversely, maybe they were on the next page and did not get tabulated; if this is true you can calculate the missing votes. When I do the math, I get that there are (1+2+3+...+30)*12 = 465*12 = 5580.When I add up the votes I only get 5367 (including 93 for those over #30). This leaves a difference of 213, which ranks them 13th, ahead of Minnesota.

Who do you send the correction? I thought the polling was of many coaches? Seems like this polling thing is a farse at best. What a freaking joke. Can you imagine if the NCAA football rankings came out and a top 15 team won over another top 15 team and then when the polls came out they dropped out of the top 25 rankings? Heads would roll. The sad part is that the incompetence is stunning! It just hurts our sport.

The only mistake was that Virginia was not included in the listing. Put them in with 213 votes and they slot in at about 13th place. Do you not understand what the issue is and how you can calculate exactly how many votes were missing (and hence were cast for Virginia)?
The total number of votes needs to be 12 voters x [30+29+28+…+2+1] = 12 x 465 = 5580. If you add up all of the votes for the teams listed you total only 5367 (which includes 93 for the teams outside of the top 30). This leaves 5580 – 5367 = 213. Assuming that Virginia is the only team that is ‘missing’, that should be their total. Of course, this fits with their performance as well.

Well you can look at it like this, then: Divide each voters vote weight be 465, so that first place gets 30/465; thus
[30+29+28+…+2+1] = 12 x 465 = 5580 ;

Are you trolling or are you dense. The thing that almost certainly happened is that someone missed a row when they were copying the results onto the website. The LEFT OUT Virginia from the list on the web but it was in the polling and in the polling it got 213 points and that puts it at number 13. Take all the teams lower than that and increase their ranking number (e.g. 20 -> 21, 30-> NR). If you do not get it by now you are in Sarah Palin territory.

Who gives a crap?
Do people even read the polls? If UVA is ranked 1st and they don't make it out of the region what good is it? Polls have no weight in who actually makes it to NCAA's. This isn't football people. Cross has a play off system and you either advance or not, regardless of your rank.
