1.Haile beats Tergat by a full 10 seconds in a 1500m (Tergat probably could have gone faster based on his 7:28)
2.Haile beats Tergat by a full 10 seconds in a 5000m
3.Their 10000 times are very close
4.Haile runs a minute faster over the marathon distance
How is this possible? How does Haile crush Tergat over the shorter distances, but then is only a few seconds faster over 10000m, but then crushes him again over the marathon? Tergat could not sniff 3:31 indoors and never could really threaten Haile over the last 200m in 10k races either.
In other words, Haile is clearly coming at the 10k from the speed end of things while Tergat is pure endurance, evidenced by their 1500 and 5000 prs and the fact that Haile outkicked Tergat everytime they met. Tergat should have been the better marathoner, right? Did Haile just never reach his potential at 10000m and Tergat did? How did Haile run so damn fast at the marathon??? (over the exact same course as Tergat did!)
