At Utah High school cross-country champs the returning state champ was disqualified by an official for having her shorts waist-band rolled down. I had no idea this was illegal. She wouldn't have won the race but she was 40 seconds ahead of third. Shalaya Kipp of Skyline DQ'd. Freshwoman phenom Danielle Menlove won but Shalaya pushed her until 800 to go. I thought maybe she'd run out of bounds or something but a uniform disqualification. Seems a little ridiculous.

Unfortunately not... Ohio is the worst. I believe they disqualified a girls' state champ a few years back because her logo was too large.
God himself told me that shorts waistbands on young females cannot be rolled down if such rolling results in the midriff thus being exposed. However, it is alright to add her as one's 3rd wife if she is over the age of 12.

Actually, now that I think of it, we did have a rule in NY about logos in HS. We got compression shorts with our school logo on them, some people wore them alone, some wore them under their running shorts. Either way, the logo was too big apparently so we had to either wear them inside out or roll the leg up to cover the logo.
I remember being pretty ticked because I really wasn't interested in the shorts but just got them because thats what the team was doing and we only had to pay like $10. That was still a wasted $10 though because I only wore them once.
There are still tons of girls who have their midriffs showing especially when wearing spankies or fitted uniforms though. Never heard anyone have a problem with it.
It was actually a USATF official who disqualified her. Is there something in the rules against this? If so I had no idea.
I doubt there's a rule, unless its a local one. Just because someone is USATF certified doesn't really mean a ton.
I actually downloaded all 276 pages of the USATF manual. It says clothing must not be objectionable, for instance, clothing can't be see-through even when wet. But I don't know how this was applied here. I'm appalled. Go Shalaya, don't let this bring you down.

I like to naively think of running as a pure sport where there are no judges and officials to mess up and decide the outcome. It is impressive the ways they find to screw people over sometimes.
Haddonfield NJ fought and won to disqualify a team on the 4x400 because the other team didn't wear exact matching uniforms (i believe one kid had different color spandex shorts under his shorts or something like that)
Ridiculous.. and that event decided the conference championship too.

Konro - USATF has no jurisdsiction over what a HS does in a HS Meet, the NCAA does and that sounds like something they would do.

It's really a simple sport: Line up, first one to the finish line wins. Throw in parents who want to re-write every one of their own failures vicariously and you are in for trouble. Jewelry and uniforms are about all losers can point out, so they do. What warped role models these parents are to their children.
No wonder why it's so hard to get volunteers to be officials these days.

Every high school coach knows the uniform rules upside down and inside out...and rolled down. They inform their athletes that they CANNOT roll their shorts down. Yes, it is stupuid...but it is a rule that is adhered to. It makes no nevermind that the official was USATF....he was following high school federation rules...and those clearly state that you must wear the uniform only as it was intended. So too bad, the girl should have known the rules by the end of the season.
