I have a good runner on my team who is a junior and ran 5:08 last year. I feel like it would be great if she could go sub 5 this year.
One way I was thinking could possibly work was this:
In races like dual meets (our school is part of a very competitive league, so competition is no problem), should she try to go out at sub 5 pace (basically, 4:59 pace)? For example, run the first lap in ~74-75. Then, try to hold on for the 2nd lap... and as far as she can go (maybe up to the 3rd lap or slightly longer, in her "5:08" fitness). Once she drops off of 5:00 pace and can't pick it up, she should just pull out of the race or slow down to a jog and finish it in easier.
Dual meets are usually once every week or once every two weeks, and couldn't this be a good workout for her once in a while? Get used to the pace she needs to run at, and hopefully based on her other workouts during the rest of the week, she'll be able to cover more and more distance until she breaks 5.
What do you all think? Has anyone ever tried this approach? Any suggestions?
