I am a high school cross country coach in Indiana and I was hoping to get some racing advice for an upcoming important meet. The course starts off mostly flat and then from mile 1 to mile 2 it is all on trails that wind around and up with some rolling hills, though not too severe. I am trying to give advice to my runners on how to run this race. There are about 70 runners by the way in this race. Is it a good idea to go out a little harder than normal to get into good position before the trails? I am thinking that there may not be much passing on the trails due to the windyness. I hesitate to tell me runners this for fear that they will kill themselves in mile 1 and not recover. Mile 2-3 is again mostly flat wide grass.
Any advice?
