German Fernandez is a Serious Threat to Win NCAA Cross Country Nationals

What's this years course like? The more the course resembles "true" cross country, I think the the more difficult his chances will be to win the race. If it's relatively flat, and the Africans don't try to break the field early, maybe he can stay close enough to do some damage.

He should go to Japan and train with Sammy Wanjuri

I think that the Bengals have a better chance at winning this years super bowl than fernandez has in winning nationals.

He has the potential to maybe crack top 10 but I wouldn't be surprised if he finished top 20. Which is still a great accomplishment for a true freshman.

He will be a serious threat if he can break away from the oppressiveness of his teammates like Vail that are trying to hold him back so that he does not defeat his own teammates.

Do you think Prefontaine, one of the NCAA's greatest Cross Country runners of all-time with 3 XC Titles, would have allowed himself to be controlled by his teammates/coach and not attack his debut on his home course and challenge himself to see if he could run with that Harding Kenyan? Come on now...

Unleash the boy, if not, German, breakthrough. Race, baby, race. Stop this "controlling" behaviour from your team. They do not have your best interests in mind. The only way you can learn about yourself and your body in race situations is to challenge yourself now, early, so when the pain comes at NCAA's you will be calloused.

You are absolutely wrong. His teammates and coach are not by any means trying to hold him back. They're racing him smart now so that when it comes to the championship meets he will be prepared. This was his first 8k ever, and there was no reason to try and crush it- save the big efforts for the big races.

1) I hate Alan Webb, but he ran perfect tactics at the trials (in the finals) and just didn't have it. There were no tactics that could have proven better results for him. I saw his chubby self on pre's trails on the break day, and knew he wasn't going to Beijing that day.

2) In order to be a "true freshman" you need to have a birth certificate that isn't written on the hide of an animal.

David Kimani was 21 when he won ncaa xc as a freshman. It's not like his birth certificate said he was 18
