Do you think that you could run from and get away from one police officer?
are there any requirements for how fast police officers have to be? I think anyone that can run a 55s 400 and can keep going for a mile under 5 minutes should easily be able to get away if chased by a police officer.

No, no I couldn't.
I RAN 49.91 for the 400m, now more like 58 (getting old). Not a whole lot of folks are going to out run me. Even those with quick bursts of speed are going to get caught by my current sub 17 minute 5k in the long run.
There is a 5K in phoenix where you race active FBI agents. If you beat them you win prizes.
A couple years ago I was at the local track doing mile repeats for marathon training and the police showed up to do some fitness test. They had to run 1.5 miles I think and were falling apart after about 400 meters. Lots of them went out at ~90 second pace for the first 400 and died around the backstretch haha. I was chugging along running ~5:45ish miles and lapping these guys as some were reduced to walking. Outwardly they didn't look very out of shape either, I guess you just dont need to run much as a cop. I think the "winners" managed around 9mpm pace for the run.
When is that race and what is it called? It sounds like fun.

You're kidding right. Most police officers are totally out of shape and smoke. If you can run a 90 second 400 and a 7 minute mile, you'd be so far ahead of 99% of police officers. They'd stop chasing you after 30 meters.

it depends if you saw them coming...if they had a rolling start and you didnt know the terrain then i think they might catch you

I think most letsrunners could outrun any one cop no problem. You get caught because they call for back up, surrond the area that you are in and close in until they get you. They train to do this.
I've always wanted to set something up with the cops, maybe for their training, were they try and catch me. Just to see if I could get away from them.
In terms of lining up on a straight stretch of land with a cop 15 yards behind you, any decent runner could outrun most cops. I bet a 5:30 mile and a sub 60 400 would only be obtainable by the top 1 or 2 percent of street cops. But real world outrun-the-police situations are never that simple. You need to not only be fast (over short and long distances), but you need to be athletic enough to quickly clear obstacles like fences, and you need to have a good awareness of your surroundings. But even if you posses all of those traits, you're going to need a good bit of luck.
A direct quote from an arresting officer back in my high school days:
"Can't outrun a Motorola son." I didn't think it was remotely funny at the time.
Riding with a friend (both competitive cyclists), a mounted officer tried to stop us for some traffic violation. We pretty easily put distance on the horse, but eventually gave up upon realizing they probably had radios...
Moral of the story, its not hard to outrun/ride the police... Its the backup that'll get ya.

one of my closest friends is a cop. really good college distance guy. he runs down guys all the time. i can only imagine how surprised these guys are to look back and still see him with the hammer down.
