My '94 Tercel's exhaust pipe has found itself dragging the ground in recent days, and the replacement part I need won't be in till Tuesday or Wednesday.
The noise has attracted a good deal of attention, and today a "mechanic" approached me at the gas station telling me that the lack of exhaust backpressure will damage my valves. Is there any truth to this? If I drive 30-40 miles between now and when the part arrives, do I risk serious engine damage? The pipe is disconnected at the manifold, so there is virtually no resistance to the exhaust flow.
Personally, I think I should be fine till I can fix it, but the guy told me not to drive more than 5 miles in its current condition. I've already gone 200+ and things seem to be fine.
