Can MHR (Maximum Heart Rate) exceed 100% due to a combination of heat and humidity? I did two treadmill tests 13 years ago to determine my MHR was 189.5. Ten to twelve years ago, in 5k's with a sprint finish, I would usually hit 191 just after the finish, so I assumed 191 was MHR. Over the past 13 years, my MHR appeared to decline to 187, based on 5k's with sprint finishes. (I'm age 60 now.) Monday, I did a Labor Day 10k with even splits and kicked in the last 0.2 miles. My heart rate averaged 191 over the last 0.2 miles and showed several five second splits of 192.
Is my MHR now 192 or is this heart rate drift? I didn't think that heart rate drift would cause readings over MHR because MHR is by definition the maximum. I did briefly visit the medical tent for ice, but I was never in real distress. I didn't even have to sit down. It was HOT over the last 3 miles of the course.
