Hey guys, I'm a high school girl, a junior this year. This year over the summer (about 10 weeks) I logged in about 40-50 mpw every week. I kept it pretty consistent, and averaged around there every week. The thing is, now that the season has started.. my mileage has started lowering though there is a little more intensity/tempo. My season will probably end somewhere in November (middle-end of November).
A typical week over the summer looked like this for me:
Day 1 - 5-6 miles easy
Day 2 - 6-8 miles, either hill repeats or hilly run
Day 3 - 5-6 miles easy
Day 4 - 6-8 hilly run
Day 5 - 5-6 miles easy
Day 6 - 5-7 miles medium
Day 7 - ~10 miles long run
So as you see, the total is from 40-50 usually.
However.. now that cross country has started, this was my week:
Day 1 - 6 miles easy
Day 2 - 6-8 miles hilly
Day 3 - 4.5 miles hilly/intervals
Day 4 - 4.5-5 miles, first mile and last mile easy, then in the middle harder tempo mile
Day 5 - 2 miles warm up, 3x800 harder (interval type, though I tried to take it easier). This was the workout, but I tried to run 1-2 miles afterwards to get in more mileage (though almost no one else did).
Day 6 - really really hot, warm up (1 mile?) and a 1 mile tempo. This was the workout for the team, I ended up adding about another 2 miles.
Day 7 - I wanted to do a long run, but as a team we had to do hill repeats, maybe 4-5 miles.
So as you can see.. a huge decrease in mileage. Day 1 and Day 2 were run on my own, the other days with the team. So I've gone from 40-50 to less than 40 (only maybe ~35-40). Shouldn't I be keeping the mileage at closer to maybe 45 the next few weeks?
I'm not really sure what to do.. try to get in as much mileage as I can on the weekend not practicing with the team? So that I can at least get in around a 10 mile run a week?
Over the summer, I ran pretty much all of the mileage in singles (didn't have much time).. maybe it's time for me to add in some doubles? For example, on a day I run on my own, do a harder run in the morning, then easy 3 in the evening to get closer to 50 mpw? Another problem is that I would run in the morning most of the time (summer), so the heat is pretty tiring (practice is around 3 PM).
It's just that I've noticed that there's a lot more intense running now (even though summer just ended 1-2 weeks ago) than what I did over the summer (mostly easy stuff with a few hard hill repeats, striders).. just less mileage. However, I think I should be keeping to what I did over the summer, at least 45 mpw until maybe about October (middle or so)? So as a result, to get around all these interval workouts my coach is scheduling, I will probably have to end up doing a longer cooldown somehow. Has anyone ever had this problem, the mileage drop when the season begins? How did you get around this?
Thanks a lot for reading!
