I have just finished reading Peter Snell's book. The last five pages discuss the problem and solution to US middle distance events. He makes some seriously valid points.

Firstly the college system has a lot to answer for. Its all about short term glory for a college at the expense of a athlete. Snell believes an athlete should only run their event, whether that be 800 or 1500 only around 8 times a season.
The type of trainning being done. There are to many interval type work outs. These cause muscle damage, increase pH levels and lead to over training.
You need to constantly run 100m weeks at 5-6min miles.

So American middle distance runners need to increase the number so events they particiapte in each year.
By my count, the average runner competes in 3 or 4 races a year. Call it the Culpepper event.

Wow! I have never heard any of this before. This must be totally new information! I am so excited that we finally found the answer!
There is no solution. We even inherited Lagat, and look what being a U.S. citizen in the Olympics did to him. Webb's a 3:46 miler, but didn't make it. Lincoln's 8:08, but didn't make it. Hall's a 2:06'er and wasn't close. If Bekele became a U.S. citizen, within a couple years, he'd be running 13:55.
