As a Kenyan, its hard to admit it, but Bekele is the best distance runner ever....bar none!
That 5k was a master-class!!! We are not worthy
Hail the king!

Agreed. A masterpiece.
It also hurts me to say this but he's on a whole different level. He's toying with the rest of the field.
I would have said the same even I were a Kenyan.
Faster and more versatile than Geb at 3, 5, 10 and cross? Yes. But until he's proven himself at the half and marathon distances... Geb still needs to win gold in the marathon (this year was his shot) to cement "world's greatest ever."
That was the best, most awe inspiring race I have ever seen.
Bekele looked the Kenyans in the eyes and said "come with me if your man enough". The Kenyans tried gallantly but ultimately Bekele was too good. That last mile was Pre-esqe but of course better than Pre because he won.
I liked the fact that Bekele congratulated the Kenyans when they (eventually haha) crossed the line. That showed real class and humility.

Herdsman,
I concur.
The Kenyans try so much to STOP bekele and it just ha\sn't worked.
When Haile ran, he perennially beat Tergat but these two athletes weren't that far apart in terms of their being gifted as well as ability.
Exit Haile, enter Kenenisa.
KEnenisa is far better than Haile and will take all his records were he to choose doing that.
KEnya hasn't got a replacement for Tergat and that is the issue.
The rift has widened! There is daylight between Bekele and may be Kip;choge, Songok, Soi, Masai, Mosop, Kogo, Mathathi or whoever our best guys are in both the 5 and 10k.
Once in a while, we'll beat Bekele but more often than not, he'll take us to the cleaners. Today-sato, he wiped the floor with us.
We prayed for a fast 5k and a fast 5k is what he gave us.
Eliud Kipchoge couldn't cope. I doubt that El G would have beaten Bekele today. I serioulsly doubt it.
Let me also hail Kipchoge, He is a fighter and will always show up when it counts. like Tergat with regard to Haile, he is unfortunate to have been born in the same decade as Bekele.
Let me also add Dibaba in Bekele's class. She is excellent!
I do not know what happened to Defar but Dibaba owns all the women.
Does anyone know what happpened to Geleta Burka BAti? I missed the 1,500m women's heats but I know she didn't make the finals.
Great run by Bekele and Dibaba.
Ethiopia, my hat is off! Congratulations! You have the finest athletes in KEnenisa and DIbaba.
I meant 'today-saturday'.

That last mile was Viren-esque, but better because KB ran 12:57. Looking at the times from the other runners, you can see that there is a mental aspect to it. Look at the times of the European runners in the '84 games and leading up to those games. Those guys would have been in the race and possibly medaled - not gold of course. KB is super.
Any links to the video? I'd really like to see his last 2k!
Yep I agree Viren-esqe is a better description.
I guess all that Nike shameless marketing of Pre is working if he is the first comparison I think of when someone does something incredible.
Overall we still own Ethiopia.....we are ranked 4th overall in track and field.....13 medal vs 6 for ethiopians...am glad they still kiss our ass!!! with or without Bekele kenyan still da best.
800m 2 gold,1 silver and 1 bronze.
1500m 1 gold 1 silver.
3000m steeple chase 1 gold, 1 bronze.
5000m silver,bronze.
10000m Bronze
good range!
But this thread is about Bekele, not Ethiopia vs. Kenya. Give credit where credit is due.
And then comes another Kenyan airhead who, most probably is not even a runner, and makes a statement like this:

When was the last time you won 10K gold? I say in over 20 years. 5K? You do the counting, idiot. Let me tell you something - Bekele LAPS Kenyans.
How about women? You stand no chance.
So be humble and don't blow hot air - acknowledge greatness. It's part of the sport.

Okay Haile Selassie,
A little humility will do. Who is the idiot here?
Isn't this about sports. Let's be humble both in victory and defeat.
Sports is supposed to bring people together. Aren't we supposed to be good neighbours? Your comments are a little off.
EPO....
NativeSon,
As a neighbor and athlete myself, I have always respected Kenyan talent individual and/or in general. However, when I read idiotic comments such as the one I responded to, it ticks of a nerve that urges a retaliation that could correct course. As you know from history, Ethiopians are respectful people but warriors when attacked - Italians had the harshest lessons.
So - go consult your countryman and teach etiquette rather than preaching to me, my friend.
Selassie
the EPO-THIANS ARE TREMENDOUS FRAUDS....

Selassie,
You have a little cockiness in you. I have met very down to earth Ethiopians who strike me as very humble.
That's all I have to say. Peace!
