At my meet on Saturday, I was running with a teammate (during the race), when some asshole starting hitting my teammate in the back. Then, he shouted bizarre threats at him.
Without thinking, I wheeled around and punched him in the face, in the cheeck/jaw area. The guy stumbled a bit, but kept on racing. He didn't say another word or attempt anything else dirty.
I consider myself a very good sportsman. I always wish people good luck and congratulate them after the race. I don't go looking for fights, but when the race starts and somebody hits me first, I always retaliate violently.
I have a couple of questions.
1) Have you guys ever hit someone in a race, and why?
2) Do you think it is unsportsmanlike to respond to violence with violence?
3) Do you think I was justified to punch this guy in the face, or should I have dealt with the situation differently?
