At about the 20 mile mark one of the chinese women picked up a large bottle (probably water) from an aid station. She took a drink, splashed some on her face, then turned around and handed it to the other chinese woman running behind her. Isn't that illegal assistance?
Not sure of the fairness of that move, but I thought it was more peculiar ealier in the race when one of the Chinese ladies totally dissed her teammate by not offering her a swig of water from a bottle and just throwing the bottle aside.

It's fair. It happens in marathons all the time at the front. Between teammates and between non-teammates.
At one time it was illegal, you could not accept aid from anyone nor could teammates from one country work together. Both have fallen by the wayside. Too bad.

Don't believe it was ever against the rules to share a water bottle. It was against the rules to share it with a spectator!! Two people in the same race are permitted to share it.
I saw bottle sharing throughout the race from athletes that wern't even from the same country. It wasnt' just the Chinese, but the entire field was doing it throughout the race, so with your logic, the entire field was cheating???
Yes, it is one of the cooler aspects of our sport. Competitors may share water if one missed a bottle. It is as if to say "we are brothers" (or sistes) and let the best runner win.
How about two runners sharing a Chinese woman? Is that against the rules?

Rotterdam - he missed his bottle @ 30km, and his friend at the aid station grab it, ran up to him and handed it to him. 2:17 + and a DQ.
I saw coaches/managers actually handing runners bottles at several aid stations (I recall Kenya was one of them). Several of the people I was watchingwith (some of whom had run in last year's men's OT marathon) commented that they thought that was definitely against the rules, but being ignored because of the anticipated conditions.

Different year - '07 was the renactment of Bataan, when they cancelled the race after 3hrs. Jason's race was '06.
They also cut some corners...did you see it?

The rule stats athletes can collect the water only from aid stations, as long as another athlete collected it from an aid station its allowed to be passed around.
Now if your friend has a bike and just follows you around the course with 38 water bottles its super illegal.
